A pentane solution of cobaltocene has been adsorbed on the aluminophos
phate molecular sieve AlPO4-5. The product (after exposure to air) con
tains pentane and water as well as the metallocene in its oxidised for
m, i.e. cobalticenium. The guest:host material was thermally decompose
d at 500 degrees C in vacuo. XAS, FTIR and C-13 NMR show that the ther
mal decomposition product (ampoules opened in air) contains cobalt ato
ms bonded to oxygen lattice atoms and possibly some absorbed water.
