Abstract
Using coupled-mode theory, a simple model is developed which elucidate s the operation of vertically integrated waveguide/photodetectors with emphasis on the underlying physical principles. The coupled-mode theo ry results are shown to agree well with numerical simulations using th e finite difference beam propagation method.
