There is widespread interest in the passive optical network as a solut
ion for a future fiber in the loop network. This paper addresses the p
roblem of synchronization at the line termination of a passive optical
network that uses high-speed time division multiple access. Synchroni
zation is a critical function since each ATM cell arrives with unknown
phase. An ASIC has been developed to perform this function at 622 Mb/
s and is outlined here.
