The epidemiologic features and results of management of 22 cases of re
tained intraocular foreign bodies seen over a period of 6 months are p
resented. Highlights of the study include the occurrence of such injur
ies in young men, the predominance of chisel-and-hammer injuries, the
lack of a high degree of reliability of electroretinographic findings,
and the improved postoperative visual acuity and good visual prognosi
s after surgery in the majority of patients. Based on their favorable
experience, the authors advocate early surgical management by pars pla
na vitrectomy and foreign body removal using a foreign body forceps.
