This note describes the first cyphonautes larva (Bryozoa: Gymnolaemata
) to be reported from Antarctic seas. It was found in samples taken in
mid-water (600-250 m depth), beneath the ice in the Bellingshausen Se
a, in the austral summer. From its external characteristics it appears
to be the larva of a species of the ctenostomate genus Alcyonidium. T
he only species of this genus known in the Antarctic are A. flabellifo
rme Kirkpatrick and A. eighfsi Winston and Hayward.
