The fieldwork practicum is reviewed within an international library an
d information work context. The South African requirements for the pra
cticum in education and training are outlined and the problems associa
ted with various approaches analyzed. The planning and implementation
of a simulated fieldwork program at the University of Natal in Pieterm
aritzburg is described. The objectives of the program and its phases a
re explained and the evaluation and overall value and problems of the
program are discussed. Areas for further research are identified.
