Cs. King et al., NESIDIOBLASTOSIS ASSOCIATED WITH HYPERGLYCEMIA IN 2 SQUIRREL-MONKEYS (SAIMIRI-SCIUREUS), Journal of medical primatology, 25(5), 1996, pp. 361-366
Nesidioblastosis associated with progressive weight loss and hyperglyc
emia was diagnosed in two mid-adult, wild-caught, male squirrel monkey
s (Saimiri sciureus). Hyperglycemia, glucosuria, and abnormal glucose
tolerance test results were found when the monkeys were presented for
clinical evaluation for chronic weight loss, episodic dehydration, hyp
othermia, and lethargy. Immunohistochemical studies of the pancreatic
tissue demonstrated that the proliferating endocrine cells stained pre
dominantly glucagon-positive in the most severely affected monkey.
