Abstract
We have measured the in vitro influence of magnesium on platelet aggre gation and platelet secretion from alpha-granule, induced in human pla telets by Adenosine-Di-Phosphate. Magnesium in concentrations up to 8 mmol 1-(1) inhibited Adenosine-Di-Phosphate induced aggregation, p < 0 .001. Magnesium had no effect on the rise in the concentration of beta -thromboglobulin, released from alpha-granules upon Adenosine-Di-Phosp hate stimulation, p > 0.05. A differential action of magnesium on plat elet aggregation and release have not been reported before, and possib le mechanisms are discussed. We conclude that magnesium inhibit platel et aggregation but not platelet alpha-granule release.
