In this study, the optical rotatory power of sucrose-water solutions i
s exploited and digital, spectral image analysis is used to nonintrusi
vely measure one-dimensional species distributions within a liquid. Th
e measurement scheme is described and is used in experiments ranging f
rom one-dimensional isothermal diffusion to layered double-diffusive c
onvection.
