Abstract
Basic science - including space science - is vital for national develo pment, but developing countries often meet obstacles to participation in the international scientific community. This can be mitigated by in ternational cooperation, particularly in the field of education. The a uthor calls for a concerted effort to increase such cooperation region ally, internationally and bilaterally; international organizations sho uld also become involved. Various forms of cooperation are suggested a nd UN efforts in the promotion of basic space science are described.
