In the paper gas phase deactivation of a silica surface with cyclic or
ganosilicon compounds is described. The emphasize is put on the reacti
vity of the modifiers and the low reactivity of octamethylcyclotetrasi
loxane is evidenced. The effects of gas phase deactivation of the sili
ca surface are compared with those of liquid phase processes. Cyclosil
oxane and cyclosilazane modified surfaces are compared as well. Finall
y a gas phase titration of strongly adsorbing sites is shown for some
modified surfaces and the existence of a great variety of the sites on
the surfaces is pointed out.
