A new experimental technique utilizing a high-spin isomer beam (HSIB)
has been developed. The HSIB of Hf-174 was produced by the Be-9(Er-170
, 5n)Hf-174 reaction in inverse kinematics, By using the HSIB, the Cou
lomb excitation of the K-pi = 8(-) isomer in Hf-174 was measured. The
gamma-rays from the 9(-) level, which is the first excited state built
on the isomer, were observed as well as the cascade gamma-rays of the
ground-state rotational band. From the measured gamma-ray yield, a va
lue of 2 +/- 1 e(2)b(2) was extracted for the B(E2 : 8(-) --> 9(-)). T
his is the first experiment of gamma-ray spectroscopy by means of the
HSIB-induced secondary reactions.
