Flow-vacuum pyrolyses of 5H-dibenzo[a, d]cycloheptene (1) and 10,11-di
hydro-5H-dibenzo[a, d] cycloheptene (7) mere studied at 1 Torr and dif
ferent temperatures between 400 degrees C and 800 degrees C. The main
reaction products mere, in both cases, 9-methylanthracene (3) and anth
racene (2) occurring in different sequences : 3 then 2 in pyrolyses of
1 and 2 then 3 in pyrolyses of 7. Hydrocarbon 7 is thermally more sta
ble than 1. Reaction mechanisms including radicalic and concerted step
s were suggested. For hydrocarbon 1 a comparison with the previously d
escribed (Pomerantz(3)) results of pyrolyses in static system is given
