Directing a high-speed, high-temperature, seeded jet generated by a mi
cro-combustor past the concave side of a 'cold', platinum circular foi
l whose temperature is actively controlled, we investigate the simulta
neous action of inertial and thermophoretic effects on particle deposi
tion from curved, laminar boundary layer flows. Although particle Stok
es numbers in these experiments are of O(10(-2)), much smaller than th
e values customarily thought to signal the onset of inertial effects,
we observe a significant increase of particle deposition rates over th
ose expected based on 'pure thermophoresis' theory, in agreement with
a recently developed theory of inertially modified thermophoresis in s
uch flows.
