A ten-year-old girl admitted for recurrent pneumococcal meningitis was
found upon computed tomography with metrizamide to have a petrospheno
idal meningocele. The meningocele was removed and the fistula closed v
ia the subtemporal approach. There were no further episodes of meningi
tis. The etiopathogenesis, imaging, and surgical treatment of these ex
ceedingly rare congenital defects are reviewed.
