Abstract
The importance of directed selectivity for constitutional Es well as c onfigurational flexibility in total synthesis is illustrated with a fe w examples from the author's own work. Factors such as thermodynamic V ersus kinetic control, active versus inactive space demand and changes in reaction mechanism are shown to exercise a significant influence o n chemoselectivity, regioselectivity and diastereoselectivity.
