An eight year old budgerigar was presented in a small animal practice
with apathy, difficulty in swallowing and the escape of frothy liquid
out of the beak. An ingluviolith was diagnosed, removed by surgery and
then analysed. The data of the chemical composition indicate a concre
ment consisting of uric acid (30.6 % N) mainly. Results of further che
mical analyses were contradictory to the presence of struvite or miner
al stones. In the light of published case reports the pathogenesis of
ingluvioliths is discussed briefly.
