Performed on properly selected patients, transurethral prostatectomy (
TURP) is unmatched for long-term beneficial outcomes and symptom impro
vement. Despite the advanced average age and compromised general healt
h of most men undergoing this operation, its mortality and morbidity i
s remarkably low. While this operation is being challenged by new emer
ging strategies of management, the efficacy and durability of which re
main to be defined, TURP currently remains the standard against which
all other therapies must be judged.
