Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa as discrete entities both share a
disturbed body image, a pathological eating behavior and a plethora o
f consecutive somatic diseases. The manifestation and maintenance of t
hese behavioral disorders can be understood within a network of neurob
iological, psychosocial and cognitive-emotive determinants. The identi
fication and differentiation of these determinants are of crucial impo
rtance for a effective and rational stepwise therapy-planning. Our art
icle sums up the present ''state of the art'' concerning diagnostics a
nd therapy of these disorders.
