The reactions between CO2 and H on a Cu(110) surface modified with K i
n the submonolayer region are studied with photoelectron spectroscopy
and high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy. It is demonstra
ted that formate can be synthesized by admitting CO2 to a K/Cu(110) in
terface with preadsorbed atomic hydrogen. The adsorption sequence of C
O2 and H is decisive for the formate yield.
