The thorough survey of 1992 and 1993 showed a system of meso-scale edd
ies on the Sakhalin shelf. The cyclonic eddies were observed at the sh
allow water of the shelf, while the anticyclonic ones were located in
the open sea at boundary of the shelf. The peculiarities of the hydroc
hemical structure, as well as of the production and destruction proces
ses were studied in the zone. Primary production was estimated by nutr
ient consumption, dissolved oxygen output, and the increase of the con
tent of organic compounds of nitrogen and phosphorus.
