The electrical properties of Langmuir-Blodgett films of polypyrrole fa
bricated on a copper stearate template have been studied. The films ex
hibit domains of a highly organized two-dimensional linear array of po
lypyrrole granules sandwiched between insulating fatty acid layers tog
ether with some disorganized domains. The measured in-plane conductivi
ty does not show any appreciable anisotropy and is as high as 1.2 S cm
(-1) with a thermal activation energy of 0.15 eV. The transverse condu
ctivity of the film in a metal-insulator-metal structure is shown to b
e Poole-Frenkel emission-limited and has a value of the order of 10(-8
) S cm(-1) in the low-field region. The film then shows a high degree
of conductivity anisotropy.
