The spatial distribution of the birefringence of a gamma-Fe2O3 ferrofl
uid sample, submitted to a constant magnetic field, has been analysed
by means of different polarimetric criteria, evaluated from the mil co
efficients of the Mueller matrix. These criteria introduced by differe
nt authors are used to control the validity and the quality of our cal
culus method for the determination of the birefringence spatial distri
bution. Results are compared with the phase-delay spatial distribution
of a nematic liquid crystal cell obtained by the same method.
