In 1993, two new outbreaks of trichinosis involving 14 patients occure
d in the Alpes-Maritimes departement (France), Homemade salami prepare
d from two wild boars killed in the same area were responsible for the
contamination, Diagnosis was confirmed by the detection of muscle-sta
ge Trichinella larvae in a sample of frozen meat. The involved species
was Trichinella britovi, All patients were treated with thiabendazole
and corticosteroids with a favorable outcome, These two new outbreaks
point out the necessity to inform risk population such as the hunters
of the modes of contamination and the prevention.
