The incorporation of nanometric powder SiCxNy as a second phase within
silicon nitride matrix influences the microstructure of composite mat
erials obtained by hot pressing. The presence of a Carbon-rich second
phase permits to enhance the alpha to beta Si3N4 transformation rate b
ut inhibits the acicular growth of the beta Si3N4 grains. Si3N4/SiCN c
omposites having a fine microstructure exhibit a fairly good plastic d
eformation at high temperature.
