Abstract
The contact lens industry has grown rapidly over the past four decades due to the widespread demands of the American population for a conven ient alternative to spectacle wear for the correction of myopia. Unfor tunately, many people who wear contact lenses are not aware of the pot ential risks associated with them, and consumer education about lens c are has not been adequate. This article reviews the role of disinfecti on in contact lens wear, summarizes the current available contact lens disinfection systems, and provides recommendations for safe contact l ens use.
