Computed results for the induction smelting process are presented whic
h give considerable insight into the direct smelting process. Results
have been presented to describe the temperature, velocity, and iron ox
ide concentration in the liquid and bed regions. The procedure for mea
suring various experimental parameters in an induction smelting proces
s has been described. Model results have been compared with experiment
ally measured results for the temperature, iron oxide concentration, a
nd melt height. Computed and experimental results exhibit reasonable a
greement which demonstrates the validity of the model in describing a
smelting process completely. The success of the cell model approach he
re indicates its possible use in other materials processing operations
.
