Abstract
A mutant of Ustilago maydis (VR43) with single-gene resistance to the dicarboximide fungicide vinclozolin was previously isolated and charac terized. A genomic library was constructed, and an 8.7-kb resistance-c onferring fragment was isolated by sib selection. Sequencing this frag ment, we identified an 1,218-bp open reading frame, which, if disrupte d by deletion, no longer confers resistance. Analyses of the data in G enBank demonstrated a high degree of homology between the product of t he 1,218-bp open reading frame, referred to as the adr-1 gene, and Ser (Thr) protein kinases.
