H. Zhong et al., COMPARISON OF THE METABOLIC-FATE OF CARBARYL-NAPHTHYL-1-C-14 IN 2 BEETLE SPECIES (COLEOPTERA, SCOLYTIDAE), Journal of economic entomology, 88(3), 1995, pp. 551-557
Adult southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann, and spr
uce beetle, Dendroctonus rufipennis (Kirby), were treated topically Wi
th carbaryl-1-naphthyl-C-14, after which metabolism of the labeled che
mical was studied. Methylolcarbaryl was the major metabolite in both b
eetle species; its concentration reached 5.18% in internal extracts fr
om southern pine beetle at 8 h and 1.21 and 3.58% in internal extracts
from spruce beetle at 12 and 24 h, respectively. The southern pine be
etle metabolized C-14-carbaryl and excreted its metabolites more quick
ly than the spruce beetle. Other methanolic extractable metabolites we
re tentatively identified from both species as 8-hydroxy-1-naphthyl me
thylcarbamate, 5-hydroxy-1-naphthyl methylcarbamate, 1-naphthyl methyl
carbamate, 1-naphthol, 1,4-naphthalenediol, and 1,5-naphthalenediol. S
everal unidentified metabolites were also present.
