Rectal tear in bovines is relatively common accident, iatrogenic in as
sociation with rectal examination and may result due to tenesmus durin
g parturition or due to obstetrical procedure in protracted cases of d
ystokia (Johnson, 1943), The tear may lead to rectal fistula, recto-va
ginal fistula or recto-vesicular fistula and may prove fatal due to sh
ock and acute peritoritis. Temporary diverting colostomy has been advo
cated in equines (Spiers et al., 1980; Mcllwraith and Turner, 1987). B
ut application of this technique in bovines is not documented. The pre
sent study was taken up in bovines to compare the techniques of end an
d loop colostomy in experimental calves rind its subsequent applicatio
n in clinical cases.
