Me. Nielsen et J. Fultz, FURTHER EXAMINATION OF THE RELATIONSHIPS OF RELIGIOUS ORIENTATION TO RELIGIOUS CONFLICT, Review of religious research, 36(4), 1995, pp. 369-381
The present research replicates earlier findings that the Intrinsic, E
xtrinsic, and Quest orientations are differentially related with relig
ious conflict. Additional analyses explored the relations between spec
ific dimensions of religious orientation and conflict. Quest was signi
ficantly associated with a sense of uncertainty. The Doubt component o
f Quest also correlated significantly with a perceived need to be more
valiant in one's religiousness and with the belief that it is difficu
lt to reconcile science with religion. Intrinsic religiousness was eit
her negatively or not correlated with conflict. Social-Extrinsic and R
eligious Seriousness scores were positively related to conflict. Perso
nal-Extrinsic religiousness showed a complex relationship with conflic
t, correlating negatively, positively, or not at all with aspects of c
onflict.
