Plantar fasciitis, a common over-use use injury, is characterized by h
eel pain that is usually more severe when the patient first arises. Fr
equent precipitating factors include adverse foot mechanics, training
errors, and degenerative changes. Management of plantar fasciitis is a
three-part process that involves treating the inflammatory lesion, co
rrecting precipitating factors, and instituting a graduated rehabilita
tion program. Use of the tension night splint has shown promising resu
lts.
