Enzyme histochemistry combined with horseradish peroxidase retrograde
tracing demonstrated NADPH-diaphorase activity in the spinal sympathet
ic preganglionic neurons in the spinal cord of the filefish, Stephanol
epis cirrhifer; these neurons with NADPH-diaphorase activity were loca
ted just dorsal and lateral to the central canal. The results indicate
that nitric oxide is synthesized in the spinal sympathetic preganglio
nic neurons of filefish.
