Abstract
Free radicals are generated in the body both under physiological condi tions and in response to exogenous initiators. The author gives a brie f account on the possibilities of free radical production and on their role in physiological and pathophysiological processes. The defensive mechanisms against the free radicals are also presented. Finally, the free radical theory of atherosclerosis, cancer and alcohol induced li ver diseases is discussed.
