TLC, UV/VIS and TLC/UV methods were adapted for the determination of m
ezlocillin (1) in presence of its breakdown products. It was found tha
t in aqueous solutions of 1 and in the solid phase various chemical pr
ocesses take place, since different breakdown products are formed. Dir
ect UV measurements were shown to be unsuitable for the determination
of the stability of 1. The result obtained by the VIS and TLC/UV metho
ds were similar to those obtained by the iodometric method, with the e
xception of kinetic measurements in the solid phase in the presence of
humidity. Particularly suitable was the TLC/UV method which made poss
ible the simultaneous monitoring of the qualitative and quantitative c
hanges in the kinetic stability studies of 1 under various conditions.
