Light microscopic autoradiographs were prepared of isolated guinea pig
endolymphatic sac (ES) tissue incubated with iodine (I)-125-labeled i
nsulin (insulin I 125). These demonstrated specific binding of the ins
ulin I 125 to receptors in the ES. Receptor-mediated endocytosis of th
e insulin-receptor complex is postulated to occur, and the relevance o
f insulin receptors in the ES is discussed, with particular emphasis o
n the previously observed synthesis of hyaluronan from glucose by the
ES.
