The stability and the hydrolysis and condensation kinetics of bis(trie
thoxysilyl)ethane in the water-ethanol solution were investigated usin
g FTIR spectroscopy with a transmission type cell having a very short
pathlength. The pH dependence of bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane's overall s
tability was measured and evaluated, and a new approach was designed t
o calculate hydrolysis rate constants from the experimental results. F
urthermore, equations involving both hydrolysis and condensation proce
sses were solved and the calculated results were compared with experim
ental data.
