This paper describes research activities aimed at developing polymer m
aterials that will support and promote the transition from computing a
nd communication based on electricity to optical handling of data stre
ams. It deals with chemical synthesis of polymers possessing a well-de
fined, functional basic structure, and with physical characterization
at the (sub)molecular, supramolecular and macroscopic levels, includin
