We discuss a number of design issues that affect the performance toler
ances of substrate-mode holograms used for optical interconnect system
s. We examine the effects of emulsion uniformity, thickness variation,
and index variation on the ability to determine the Bragg angle and t
he diffraction angle within The environmental stability with respect t
o temperature, laser irradiance, and Experimental results are presente
d for substrate-mode holograms fabricated in spin-coated dichromated-g
elatin emulsions. The coupling properties for a 1 x 2 multiplexed subs
trate-mode hologram with two superimposed gratings are also described.
