Abstract
An overview of material research and product development for polymer-b ased composite materials since the 1950s in Japanese general industria l use is given. This progress is divided into four steps, each lasting about one decade; the trends of the fourth period (1984-today), follo wing the third, transition period, are emphasised. In addition, as a f uture perspective, the possibility of development of intelligent or sm art materials is also discussed.
