In this paper a kinematic description of the restrictions imposed on t
he eye movements is presented. The restrictions arise from a pattern o
f nonlinear interactions between desired changes in viewing direction
and current eye position. It is shown that various reported relations
between eye torsion and viewing direction can be derived by changing o
nly the relative weights of the interaction terms. This descriptive sc
heme may help to elucidate the control of eye torsion in the brainstem
.
