Dengue fever is caused by four viruses antigenically related without c
ross protection, Since twenty years, the incidence is continuously gro
wing and represents a major public health problem in Asia, South Ameri
ca and Oceania. The outbreak of New Caledonia (1989) is described, Phy
siopathology is complex particularly the factors responsible of Dengue
Haemorrhagic Fever and Shock Syndrome, The different pattern of epide
mic are rewieved in Oceania and others areas in the world where the fo
ur viruses are isolated. The prevention remains based on the control o
f vectors. In the future, the vaccine must include all four viruses, t
o induce a protective and global immunity.
