ROLE OF HIGHER-PLANTS IN THE DETERIORATION OF HISTORIC BUILDINGS

The growth of higher plants over monuments and historic buildings is o ne of the major problems faced by conservators especially in tropical countries. These plants have been reported to cause physical as well a s chemical damage. This paper reviews the present status of knowledge in this field with respect to the plant species generally found growin g over the monuments, types and mechanism of damage and their control methods.
