Abstract
The main difference between the genome structures of shallot virus X ( ShVX) and related potex- and carlaviruses is the unique gene of ShVX c oding for a 42K protein. The amino acid sequence of this protein was a nalyzed and compared with those of similar proteins from several newly characterized viruses of garlic. Using antibodies against the recombi nant 42K protein, expression of the ShVX 42K protein was detected in m ost plants where infection is documented by the presence of the ShVX c oat protein.
