Abstract
On the application of pressure at 300 K, ThAl2 (AlB2-type hexagonal at STP) exhibits an isostructural transition at around 5.5 GPa. Later it undergoes a phase transition from hexagonal to orthorhombic structure at 12 GPa and then to tetragonal at about 25 GPa. This pressure-induc ed structural sequence is observed rarely for an AlB2-type f-electron system. Comparison is made to existing structural data.
