A double Delta E-E detection set-up was constructed to measure the yie
ld and energy characteristics of a-particles and tritons emitted in te
rnary fission processes. The binary fission fragments can also be meas
ured in the same geometrical conditions. A methane filled, back-to-bac
k ionization chamber with common cathode is used for the Delta E-secti
ons. The ternary particles are stopped in two surface barrier detector
s situated inside the gas chamber. The detection set-up has been teste
d with the spontaneous ternary fission of Cf-252 and the neutron induc
ed ternary fission of U-235 at the GELINA facility of the IRMM at Geel
. The results have been compared with a computer simulation of the exp
ected energy signals for the applied configurations.
