So. Shattuck et Aj. Mcarthur, GENERIC PLACEMENTS OF AUSTRALIAN ANTS DESCRIBED BY ERICHSON,W.F. (HYMENOPTERA, FORMICIDAE), Journal of the Australian Entomological Society, 34, 1995, pp. 121-123
The generic placements of the five species of Australian ants describe
d by Erichson in 1842 are reviewed. Three of the species, Amblyopone a
ustralis, Camponotus consobrinus and Polyrhachis hexacantha, are corre
ct in their current placements. The remaining species, macrocephala an
d procidua, were incorrectly placed in Iridomyrmex Mayr and are transf
erred to Camponotus Mayr and Anonychomyrma Donisthorpe, respectively.
A neotype is designated for C. macrocephalus, which is a new senior sy
nonym of C. fictor Forel. The junior secondary homonym C. macrocephalu
s Emery, from Brazil, is replaced with its former junior synonym C. ge
ralensis Emery (which is raised to full species).
