Abstract
The rate of oxygen consumption of the heart is classically measured us ing the Fick principle. Uncritical application of this principle can c ause errors of measurement, particularly when estimating cardiac basal metabolic rate. Consideration of these errors leads to a model that s upports modern notions of oxygen exchange in perfused tissue.
