Se. Rushing et al., HOW DENTISTS PERCEIVE THE EFFECTS OF ORTHODONTIC EXTRACTION ON FACIALAPPEARANCE, The Journal of the American Dental Association, 126(6), 1995, pp. 769-772
In recent years, orthodontic treatment, particularly that involving pr
emolar extractions, has been alleged to cause flat facial profiles. Th
ose who make such assertions also claim to be able to instantly identi
fy from a distance faces of patients who have received orthodontic tre
atment. These are strong claims that could profoundly affect the publi
c's perception of dentistry and its specialties. This study examined w
hether dentists could distinguish between profiles of treated and untr
eated patients as well as between patients who had undergone extractio
n and those who had not.
