HD 79968 has been known for some time as a spectroscopic binary, but t
he orbit of this system remained unknown until now. Our observations,
carried out at Observatoire de Haute-Provence with the CORAVEL spectro
meter, lead to the following orbital elements: P = 30.50253 days; T =
2448008.696 JD; omega = 65 degrees.8; e = 0.187; K-1 = 40.3 km/s; K-2
= 45.3 km/s; V-0 = +25.3 km/s; alpha(1) sin i = 16.6 Gm; alpha(2) sin
i = 18.7 Gm; M(1) sin(3)i = 1.00 M.; M(2) sin(3)i = 0.89 M.. The ratio
of the correlation dip areas indicates a magnitude difference Delta m
(B) similar to 0.9 between the components. The observational data (M(1
,2) sin(3)i, Delta m, M(V), B - V and the spectrum) are consistent wit
h spectral types G3-4V and G9V for the primary and secondary component
s respectively. The M(1) sin(3)i value, one solar mass, suggests stron
gly that i should be near 90 degrees. This detached system (alpha = 50
R.) thus might be an eclipsing one.
